From time to time, we here at Buckeye Shorthair Kennels plan to post articles about some of our favorite topics. We will update this page often, so be sure to stop back and see if our articles are something that pique your interest.
What comes to mind when you hear the term “versatile dog”? If you are like me the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) takes precedence over the rest. The GSP truly is a versatile dog for many reasons, such as the ability to point and hold game until the sportsman comes onto the scene, ability to track downed or wounded game, and lastly possess a soft and comforting personality. The personality of the GSP allows the breed to be master oriented and full of raw desire, making it a pleasure to train.
Take a good look into the eyes of a GSP, and one will understand. The GSP is very closely tied to the emotions of their handlers. After a long day of work the GSP will graciously greet their master at the door ready to play, which eases the mind of their master. The GSP will quietly settle in for a spell on the couch, and be content lounging with its’ master. When told to do something the GSP will jump to attention as if to say “as you wish sir”. A dog that wants to please is always a pleasure to train.
The GSP has an endless amount of desire. Once asked to perform, the GSP will stop at nothing less than its personal best. When odds are not in favor for the GSP, they somehow find away to get the job done with grace. The GSP does not seem to have the words “can’t” and “give up” in their vocabulary. I have even seen a three legged dog run through sections of clear cut forest at full speed that even a human would find difficult to walk through. The demeanor of the breed is easy going and always ready for a new challenge. This also makes them a pleasure to train.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is my breed of choice for many reasons. The breed is master oriented and obtains the correct characteristics to be very trainable. A person will be forced to look long and far to find a breed that comes as readily to train as the German Shorthaired Pointer.
